Since building this generator, I have not used my 120VAC generator. This is capable of putting 600 watts, into my batteries, which is adequate to make up quickly for large loads off my inverter. I'll admit, it's a little work in the morning to start it, but once started it can run for many hours with no maintenance short of adding water. It seems to use about a gallon of fuel every 4 hours, not bad in my opinion...a LOT better than my old Honda generator (which quit after two years) which pounded itself to death charging batteries with a battery charger. Although antique engines may not be everybody's preference, a good slow running charger like this should be an important part of any "off the grid" battery powered system. Something like this, a good battery bank, and a strong inverter can go a long ways!

One more plug for George at : He's written a wonderful artical (About 80 pages long) called Lister Longevity. He suggests that folks buy it before they get into one of these engines, and I'd have to agree. Some manufactures do a better job than others, I think mine falls somewhere inbetween. (George knows which ones are good, which are bad.. and which are a good gamble!) "Lister Longevity" goes into a lot more depth than his pages at , and it not only tells the reader what they may be getting into, but it also details lots of assembly/disassembly proceedures - lots of tips on improving them.... the document in my opinion makes the engine a much more valuable thing.

Long story short, I spent two weeks researching, cleaning off and aligning timing marks (three of them) and removing access panels and accessories. I would fix this sucker. After all, how hard could it be? Then as I was waiting for the courage to remove what I was sure was the offending pump a man rang my doorbell and asked if I had an Oliver for sale. He needed one. I told him the situation as best I could. He made an offer on the stipulation I put it back together in running condition so he could load it, which I accepted and which I did.
